Ants are tiny creatures that can take up residence in your home if they find an abundance of their food sources. Also, they can invade your garden and can go anywhere because of their size. Before you try to manage an ant infestation, you should learn more about these pests and why you should find a pest control company today.

Ants go through metamorphosis and pass through four stages. They can start from egg to larva, become a pupa, and reach adulthood. A queen ant can lay up to 1 million eggs before her passing. Once she emerges with wings, she looks for a mate. Then, she tears off her wings after her flight to get to work. The queen ant can survive for decades.

    Natural Treatments for Ants

Natural Treatments for AntsThe majority of people handle their ant problems without expert help. Because ants forage in human food, there are things you can use to eliminate ants. Below are natural treatments against ants:

    • Coffee grounds. These products can detour ants. Ants come inside from the outside and using coffee grounds can get these pests at the source. Just sprinkle them around plants and outside of the door to repel ants. Ants do not like the feel of coffee grounds on their feet. Thus, they will avoid this area.
    • Borax. Borax is a cleaning and laundry care product that can be lethal to ants. Use borax, water, and sugar to make a paste and put it on a plate. You will find ants floating dead in this mixture after a few hours. But not all of them will die right away. Those that will survive will take the mixture back and share it with the colony.
    • White vinegar. Vinegar has a pungent smell that can help control ants. Mix ¾ cup of vinegar and ¼ cup of water and spray the mixture over ant trails. This will eliminate scent trail, throwing ants off the track.

    Proactive Ant Control

If ants have invaded your home, you may find them everywhere. A full-scale ant invasion will leave no space untouched. To keep your kitchen free of ants, you must be proactive. Below are steps you can take to prevent an ant infestation:

    • Cover everything. Use plastic containers that have locking lids to store your food supply. Ants can attack any open food box. Airtight containers can keep ants and other pests at bay and can prolong the life of your food.
    • Fix water leaks. Did you know that leaky pipes and faucets can attract ants? These pests also need water to survive and are attracted to places where they can satisfy their thirst. In addition, leaking pipes can cause bacteria and mold to develop, so fix them right away.
