5 Common Reasons Your Water Tank Is Leaking

We often take the most used and important appliances and systems in our home for granted. We rely on freshwater for so many activities like drinking, cooking, brushing, bathing, washing hands, cleaning the home, and many others. Unclean or foul-smelling water is a serious nuisance and definitely a big health hazard.

A common source of clean water is your water heater. Different problems like mechanical failure to bacteria buildup can cause a stinky water heater.

In this article, we are going to tell you some common reasons why your water heater smells-

    1. Faulty wiring

Electric home water heaters are very vulnerable to shorts. Often loose words generate heat by coming in contact. If you get a burning smell, probably your electric water heater is experiencing such an issue. If the wire’s insulation starts to melt, it causes a burning smell.

This type of malfunction comes all of a sudden. If it’s an electrical problem, don’t try to repair it yourself. First you should unplug the water heater to avoid any further damage. Then if you have a water heater warranty coverage then claim a file to your provider or else call a professional technician.

    1. Gas leak

If your water heater is fueled by gas, it can develop a leak. If you somehow smell gas near your water heater, you should immediately unplug it and call the fire department. If you know how to shut the gas of your appliances then only you do it or else don’t make any fuss without knowing the procedure. Once you shut off the gas and it is safe, call your home warranty service provider or call a professional repairing person to fix the gas leakage issue.

    1. Dirt and dust:

Older water heaters often catch dust and dirt. If the warm part of your water heater accumulates dust or debris, it often causes a burning smell. You can easily fix this problem. Shut down the water heater, let it be cool, and then wipe it clean with a clean cloth. If the smell still persists, call for professional help.

    1. Sulfate bacteria:

A lot of homeowners often find a smell of sulfur or rotten eggs coming from water or water heater. If you find this kind of smell when the cold water runs from the tap, probably the problem is at your water source.

If you only find the smell from your hot water then there is a problem with your water heater. A little DIY can help you solve the problem. You just need to flash and disinfect the inside wall of your water heater. Replace the tank’s anode rod. Of course a professional plumber can resolve the issue but if the problem still persists, replace your water heater.
