Common Winter Heating Issues and How to Solve Them

Winter is here, and that means your heater is working overtime to keep your home warm. But what if your heater starts acting up just when you need it most? Don’t worry many common winter heating issues have quick fixes. Let’s check out some typical problems and solutions to keep your home cozy all season long.

    1. The Heater Won’t Turn On

When your heater fails to start, it can be frustrating. But sometimes, the problem is as simple as a thermostat issue or a power switch left off. Here’s what to check –

    • Ensure it’s set to “Heat” and not “Cool.” If the display is blank, it may need new batteries or a circuit breaker reset.
    • Verify that both the indoor and outdoor unit power switches are on. A tripped breaker could also be the culprit, so give that a look as well.

    2. Low or No Airflow from Vents

If there’s little or no airflow, it could be due to blocked vents or a clogged filter.

    • Check if the vent louvers are open. Sometimes, furniture or rugs may accidentally cover vents, too.
    • A dirty filter blocks airflow and strains your winter heating system. Replace it every 1-3 months, especially during high-use seasons like winter.

    3. Cold Air Blowing from Vents

When you expect warm air but feel a chilly breeze, it’s a sign something’s wrong.

    • Check if the thermostat fan is set to “Auto” instead of “On.” When it’s “On,” it’ll blow continuously, even when the heater isn’t actively warming the air.
    • For gas heaters, make sure the gas valve is open, and check for any issues with your fuel supply.

    4. Strange Noises from the Heater

Odd sounds can signal problems, from loose belts to motor issues.

    • This could mean a loose component. Contact a professional if you are not sure how to tighten it.
    • Often caused by clogged filters or ductwork. Replacing the filter or checking for duct leaks can usually resolve it.

    5. The System Cycles On and Off Frequently

Short cycling can be caused by an incorrect thermostat setting or airflow restrictions.

    • If it’s near a heat source (like a sunny window), it might signal the system to turn off prematurely. Try adjusting the thermostat location or seek help from a professional if needed.
    • Once again, a clogged filter can cause the heater to overheat and shut off before the home reaches the desired temperature. Replace the filter regularly to avoid this issue.
